Detained then Violated

Early this morning I was scrolling through Twitter, as I always do when I saw something in the News section saying that many women across the US have spoken up about being sexually assaulted while being detained in ICE centers. The article I found stated that there have been 1,224 complaints of sexual abuse and half of those are accused work for ICE. Men and women all across the US have been reported being forced to perform sexual acts with those that are working in the ICE centers they are being detained in, one man shared, "a man said a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent threatened him with deportation after he refused to engage in oral sex — and that the officer told him he would be deported to Haiti, even though the man is from the Bahamas." The reports that The Intercept have been filed from between 2010 and September 2017 I am sure the number has recently gone up, between 2010 and 2016 there had allegedly been a total of 33,000 complaints surrounding abuse happening in ICE centers. The article continued to go into detail sharing different statistics and facts about how abuse is reported from these detention centers, and how it also goes unreported. Many people fear speaking up will affect them more then they are already being affected. "Ice claims to have “zero tolerance for all forms of sexual abuse or assault against individuals in the agency’s custody.” Detailed and robust sets of policies require all facilities to have a sexual abuse and assault prevention and intervention program in place, including procedures for reporting and investigating all incidents." If they have a zero tolerance then why is the number so high of reports fo abuse? The article shared pieces of reports as well that people have filed, and going into detail how ICE has requested to destroy certain detention center records including records involving sexual assault. It was interesting reading this article and seeing the different pictures of reports it had, and all the information. I am curious to see what is going to happen with this information, will all these complaints be addressed or will Trump attempt to swoop them under the rug. This is definitely something that won't go away, and I hope is getting a lot of attention so it will continue to be addressed. I hope justice is brought to all the men and women in the detention centers being assaulted.
